The Truckers reached the end zone by capitalizing off a Royals turnover early in the first quarter while the defense didn't allow any points throughout the scrimmage

NORWALK- Better, but still not where they need to be.

That was the general consensus out of Norwalk camp Friday night after the Truckers posted a 7-0 scrimmage victory over the Division V Bucyrus Wynford Royals. The two teams played one live half of action in tuneup for the start of the 2006 season, which is next Friday the 25th.

It is believed to be the first time the Truckers have ever beaten Wynford since the two teams started scrimmaging in the 1998 season. A week ago, Norwalk outscored Monroeville in a practice scrimmage for the first time since the two teams started scrimmaging in 2002.

"We talked all week about getting better from the first scrimmage to the second," Norwalk coach Jeff Cole said. "I think we did that. We hit better, we tackled better and we did all the things we needed to do. We really concentrated on those areas and I think we improved in those areas. That's been our goal from day one, is to get better each time out."

There was little action in the scrimmage itself. Anthony Supeck, a junior transfer from Virginia, snagged an interception on the Royals opening drive and returned it 12 yards to the Wynford 20-yard line. Four plays later, quarterback Kyle Kurtz lofted a high pass to the left corner of the end zone and junior Spencer Krebs hauled it in for the score at the 9:21 mark of the opening quarter. Kurtz then added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Neither team threatened in the second quarter as the team exchanged turnovers.

The numbers weren't pretty, as Norwalk picked up just 60 yards in the half. Kurtz was 6-of-12 for 34 yards with a touchdown and an interception. The running game had 13 attempts for just 26 yards, a 2.0 average per carry. And although better from a week ago, the much talked about play of the interior line still needs work according to Cole.

"We thought we were good in places but we still had a couple breakdowns in places," he said. "It's an area we still need to continue to work with before next Friday night."

Cole then talked about the final week of practice before the season gets underway.

"I know we've improved over last year," he said. "That's what we'll continue to focus on, and now we have to get better this next week here."
